CRESTVIEW – Police say a man carrying drug paraphernalia tried to shoplift a Bluetooth speakerphone from Walmart, then ran away after being confronted by an employee.

On March 5 a Crestview Police officer went to the store to investigate the alleged shoplifting incident. An employee said he saw the man come in and pick out the Bluetooth speakerphone, then go to another part of the store where he abandoned it. He went to the pharmacy and bought Sudafed, then left the store to return a short time later and retrieve the speakerphone. He then left the store without paying for it.

When the employee confronted the man in the parking lot, he ran away on foot and abandoned his loot.

The incident was confirmed by video footage.

The man was found at a nearby apartment complex. He was positively identified by the Walmart employee, who returned a hat the man had dropped while running away. According to the arrest report, the man made several “spontaneous comments” about fleeing the employee.

When the man was searched lawmen found a syringe and a plastic container in his pocket. The container was empty but residue tested positive for methamphetamines. When officers asked the man if he was diabetic, the man “chuckled slightly and stated, ‘No,’ ” the report indicated.

He was charged with petit theft, resisting a merchant and possession of drug paraphernalia. His court date is April 9.
