CRESTVIEW – A woman who continued to insist that an article of clothing was “just a T-shirt” was arrested after a Crestview Police officer discovered the T-shirt was concealing a glass pipe used for smoking cocaine.

On Feb. 26 the officer was sent to check out a suspicious vehicle at the intersection of Edney Avenue and McDonald Street. There, he encountered a man and a woman sitting in the car.

The woman, 42-year-old Wanda Owens Coleman of Crestview, explained she was waiting on a friend to arrive with her grandchild. She could not provide her friend’s address and said she was coming from Eglin Federal Credit Union and was enroute to “Sun Set,” an alias for a housing complex near Lakeview Drive.

The officer asked and received permission to search the car. He asked Coleman to get out of the car and she was slow to respond, asking what she’d done wrong. As she got out she grabbed a red T-shirt. The officer asked if he could search her, did so, and found nothing. Then, he asked if he could search the shirt. She put it on the trunk of the car.

As the officer tried to look at the shirt, Coleman stapped in front of him, picked up the shirt and said several times, “It’s just a T-shirt.” The officer tried to take it from her and she threw it open. It contained a glass smoking device that contained a wire mess. A white powdery substance inside the device tested positive for cocaine.

When the officer tried to arrest Coleman she pulled away and refused to turn around to be handcuffed. She had to be physically restrained.

She was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest without violence and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Her court date is April 9.
